12-year-old girl bludgeoned to death in Manipur’s Thoubal district

A 12-year-old girl was allegedly bludgeoned to death by a 47-year-old man in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Thursday morning, the police said. While the reason behind the attack is still unknown, passersby held the man and handed him over to the police.

According to the police, around 7.15 am, the girl, identified as class 6 student of Vishal Academy Sapam Jesicca Devi, was on her way to her school at the Sapam Sabal village under the Khongjom police station. The accused, Sapam Sarat Singh, without any provocation from the girl, allegedly started attacking the minor with an iron rod, the passersby told the police.

Devi was rushed to a nearby hospital with profuse bleeding from her head. However, she succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.
The passersby caught Singh and handed him over to the police, which in turn registered a case and initiated a probe.

As a reaction to the murder, the local residents formed a joint action committee. The body convened a meeting and adopted several resolutions, including the demand to award capital punishment to the accused. The meeting also resolved to serve a notice to the families and relatives of the accused to leave the Khongjom circle.
